PRESS RELEASE: Police Contributing Countries from Africa to participate in Rwanda Peace Academy-UN Train-the-Trainer Course on Investigating and Preventing Sexual and Gender-based Crimes on 18 – 29 July 2011 and 1 – 12 August 2011
The Rwanda Peace Academy in conjunction with the UN Police Division, Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) will be conducting two train-the-trainer courses forparticipants from police contributing countries from Africa on 18 – 29 July 2011 and 1 – 12 August 2011 in Musanze, Northern Rwanda.
The Train-the-Trainer Course, titled “Investigating and Preventing Sexual and Gender-based Crimes”, will be conducted in both English and French during the above respective dates.
The course aims to ensure that UN Police Officers have the required knowledge of procedures and the skills necessary to manage cases on sexual and gender-based violence throughout the process of investigation, prosecution and trial.
The course also aims to enable Police Officers to efficiently advise, mentor and train their national counterparts in criminal investigations units, specialised investigations units that deal with sexual and gender-based crimes, community-based policing units, including internally displaced communities or refugee camps.
Countries to be represented at the English course will include Swaziland, Senegal, Burundi, Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa, Malawi, Kenya, Sierra Leon, Egypt, Uganda, Zambia, Timor Leste, Zimbabwe, Switzerland and Rwanda. A total of 22 participants will undertake the course in English. A similar number will undertake the course in French beginning 1st August.
The English and French courses being held in Rwanda constitute the third in a series of the course for the five regions of the world, namely, Africa, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
The course, which is based on a Standardised Training Curriculum developed by United Nations Police, has already been conducted for the Americas and Asia in Chile and the Philippines, respectively. It will be conducted in Qatar for Middle East between September and October 2011 and in Germany for Europe in November 2011.
