Regional Legal Professionals Train in the Rule of Law in Post-Conflict Peace Operations
The course on Rule of Law in Post-Conflict Peace Operations conducted by the East Africa Standby Force (EASF) in conjunction with the Rwanda Peace academy ended on 24th June 2011 and brought together 34 participants from member countries of the EASF. Countries represented at the course included Burundi, the Comoros, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, the Seychelles and Rwanda.
The overall aim of the course was to strengthen and build capacity on justice and security foundations in post-conflict peace building settings in order to create conditions that allow for long-term peace consolidation and development.
The course is designed to provide participants with knowledge needed in rule-of-law for a comprehensive peace mission and acquire the skills necessary to perform in a crisis-stricken environment. This course uses practical examples and simulations and integrates the United Nations approach to post-conflict assistance in the areas of rule of law and security institutions.
The East African Standby Force (EASF) is one of the five forces within the framework of the African Union Peace and SecurityArchitecture (APSA) towards the establishment of the continental African Standby Force (ASF). The other regional forces of the continentincludethe Southern, Northern, Western and Central AfricaStandby Forces.The Forces include military, police and civilian personnel components.
